This piece was inspired by a song my dear wife wrote <3
There once was a hunter. In the beginning, he took what was needed to survive but the need to survive begin to give way to a thirst for power as he took more and more life from the earth. In time, he lost his humanity and became a demon. Desperate to cure his disease, he sought to take the life of a unicorn. A creature whose blood and horn are said to cure every ailment.
But the demon’s gunshot upon killing the creature had alerted the empath of the woods, the forest witch. The demon explained that he had taken the life out of necessity, due to the curse he was under. But the witch saw through his excuses, for what good is it trying to right an evil curse, by committing further evil acts?
The witch of the forest is not a creature of vengeance, but of balance and she does not interfere, unless the balance is tipped. The demon, being such a disruption to the cycle, was thus eliminated.
We are given many incredible gifts which have allowed us to live more comfortably on this earth, that it can be tempting to take far more than we need. I often paint cautionary tales such as this as a reminder to myself and others to live without greed as it not only does harm to the lives of others, but inevitably, to ourselves as well.
